"Dallas" could be appreciated as a joke. "Waall, I reckon J.R. outsmarted that mo-ron Cliff Barnes again." But it was written by committee and driven by Nielsens. For example, the actor playing J.R.'s father died, so the writers had his helicopter crash in the South American jungle. The helicopter and everything on it were buried in quicksand forever, except for the father's solid gold medallion, which floated to the top so that J.R. would know what had happened.
Terry doesn't do that stuff, although a few persons who have only read the series once have sometimes accused him of that. When Terry reveals a surprise, I think you will usually find that he has foreshadowed it well in advance.
A possible exception is Katchoo's whispered hospital confession, which seems to contract a big part of "I Dream of You". I hope I'm wrong about this! I felt that Terry missed the point of some of the criticism on this. But the explanation may lie in the ambiguity of the sentence "I knew all about you" [i.e. it may be an exaggeration] and in the fact that Terry still hasn't told us all about David.

I think her saying "Iknew all about you" is her exaggerating a bit. Because as people have pointed out, she didn't recognise him at first, and she wouldn't have left Francine alone with him... etc... But I've been reading through the series with my comb and glass and I've noticed some of the funny looks she's thrown at David time to time and I've come up with a new theroy... Ok, the first time Katchoo meets David is the party the night she and Emma run away. A)she is very very drunk(or just drunk and pretending to be hammered) B)he has very long hair and wearing expensive desinger name clothes. C)she has lots of other things on her mind, escape plans, and bracing herself for watching her lover have sex with an ugly old man. So, several years later she meets David, who now has short hair, wears shabby clothes bought from stores run by Missions, and follows her like a puppy. Now she is an artist and she Knows she has seen him before but can't place him. So she keeps him as an intriguing puzzle, one that trips a tiny internal alarm of Danger. I think she slowly realized where he was from, but couldn't let herself believe it. But of course her self bravado makes her say that she knew all along.

Hey, Love and Rockets is a GOOD soap opera. It has all the right elements...bad plots, mediocore art, implausable endings and better yet some arcs that don't ever end. But I read it any way. So I guess, that makes SiP a BRILLIANT soap opera/drama. Good plots, great art, good endings, wonderfully developed charators.
